Vaping Better for Your Smile, say Scientists
It is common knowledge how smoking cigarettes can cause your teeth to become stained over time, and usually, a cigarette smoker is going to witness their teeth take on a yellow hue over the years, especially heavy smokes. But, one thing seems to be settled here. Vaping doesn’t make your teeth yellow, at least any time soon!
What is vaping, anyway?
It is an act of inhaling and exhaling aerosol, also known as vapor, which is produced by an e-cigarette or a similar device. E-cigarettes do not produce tobacco smoke, but release aerosol which is often mistaken for water vapor. Generally, a vaping device consists of a battery, a mouthpiece a cartridge for e-juice and a heating component, which then turns the e-juice/liquid into aerosol that is then inhaled and exhaled.
Why do cigarettes stain your teeth?
Cigarettes are known to be loaded with certain chemicals that absolutely destroy your health in various ways. One of the culprits is tar, found in tobacco cigarettes. Not only does it damage a smoker’s lungs over time, but also leads to various respiratory conditions. It also stains a person’s teeth, causing them to turn yellow and eventually brown.
Smoking vs. Vaping
Smoking not only damages your teeth, but it also shuts down your mouths ability to deal with infections. In layman terms, if you were to fall into an infection trap, your mouth will be defenseless, causing the bacteria to spread and remain inside your mouth. Vaping, on the other hand, decreases the chances of bacteria being present. The main ingredients present have no linkage which causes your mouth’s defense mechanism to weaken.
Poor circulation is another thing that you experience whilst smoking. The bacteria forming in your mouth will stop blood flow and oxygen from entering your mouth, which causes the tobacco and grit you’re inhaling to rub and chip against the teeth. It not only is physically uncomfortable, but also weakens the enamel. In vaping, though, tobacco and grit aren’t present, thus, eliminating the entire thing itself.
Why is Vaping a better alternative?
Unlike cigarettes, e-juices come without tar. They’re made up of vegetable glycerin, flavors, propylene glycerol and nicotine. According to some experts, nicotine may contribute towards teeth turning slightly yellow over time. However, for that you’d have to vape e-liquids with extremely high levels of nicotine.
There are over 4000 chemicals in a cigarette, which has been known to cause severe damage to mouth cells leading to cancer. Smokers are also are three times more likely to be diagnosed with mouth cancer, and seven times more likely to be diagnosed with throat cancer.
According to a new research, e-cigarettes cause minimal staining compared to traditional cigarettes. Testing was done on enamel blocks cut out from teeth of cattle and these blocks were then exposed to vapor equivalent to a pack a day of cigarettes for five days. The test showed that cigarette smoke caused the teeth to be stained in as little as one day while enamel exposed to vapor from e-cigarettes showed little to no staining.
Regardless, it is definitely better to say vaping is a safer choice.
Currently, the e-juice ingredients known to have negative effects on oral health include:
- – Nicotine
- – Menthol
- – Propylene glycol
Also, flavored e-juices can cause more gum inflammation than non-flavored ones. Limiting these ingredients can reduce your overall risk for side effects.
Nicotine and its effects:
Vaping a fluid that contains nicotine may lead to various conditions, some of them as follows:
- – dry mouth
- – gum inflammation
- – plaque accumulation
- – teeth stains and discoloration
- – gingivitis
- – receding gums
How to protect your teeth when you vape:
If you are looking for ways to avoid staining your teeth while vaping, you can simply choose vape juices with low nicotine concentration levels. If you need, or crave, more nicotine, you can monitor how much you vape throughout the day, and control that.
It is important to remember the role proper dental hygiene habits play in maintaining a gleaming smile. Brushing twice a day and flossing properly can rub away anything that leads towards the staining of your teeth.
Try to drink water after you vape so as to avoid dry mouth and bad breath.
Save That Smile
Vaping is a personal choice, but it is important to be well aware of the risks pertaining vaping. Regular checkups and dental cleanings will protect your teeth and gums.
